Since the Covid-19 virus starting getting airtime and we learned it was going to severely impact the USA we have researched and asked what to expect. Experts warned of not reacting prior to a huge outbreak. Governor Cooper has done all he can under the state of emergency to offer unemployment without the waiting week, make it available to temporary unemployed because of COVID-19. He cannot increase the amount under a state of emergency, only the Joint Legislative Committee on Unemployment Insurance can move the bill to the state house for a vote. While we are driving home or off for the next week or so please use this time to call your local state reps listed on uawlocal5285.com and especially this Unemployment Committee members listed below: None are helping except Sen Nickel- Blow their phones and emails up and demand they fix our unemployment!!

Quick update on a few things- I got a call and international says a few states (NC,too) are scrambling to fix the statute so we can get the $600 plus state. Don’t take this as a fact until they report it and please don’t let up calling your NC senators and reps like I requested. On a Federal note the bill was passed this morning 3/27. It’s looks like a tentative return to work on 4/13/20 but that could change. We are submitting our decontamination and deep cleaning expectations through our H&S Rep this AM to Detroit so they can push the company in the right direction. Our employee that was positive was feeling pretty good yesterday. Continue to pray for our brothers at Gastonia parts plant that the Lord would touch and heal them. #FlattenTheCurve

This has been a pandemic and a lifestyle change like none of us have ever seen. Continue to pray for our nation and the First Responders and all the workers in harms way everyday as we try and shelter in place. I see and hear wonderful stories coming out of this scary time. Neighbors talking and checking on others, family time and interaction that I remember from the ‘70’s and 80’s. I pray our nation takes this as a lesson that the workers are the backbone of this economy and when we don’t work the economy stops. It is a time to demand that all workers are respected, paid a living wage, provided affordable healthcare, sick time and vacation time. This used to be a standard in this country. When I grew up teachers didn’t get rich but they had these things and could retire with dignity. When we look and judge people because of the jobs they do just remember that they ARE ESSENTIAL to our country!! It is a time to quit letting political parties divide us, the working class. They highlight issues that divide us and as my Dad told me you can’t legislate morality. If you are of the Christian faith, God did not force you to accept His Son. He gave us all a choice! Life is full of choices and YOU have to make choices in life that you are accountable for. Please listen, with almost everyone in this country and state being affected by this pandemic it is THE TIME to demand permanent changes to unemployment, affordable healthcare, a living minimum wage for those who we are depending on now more than ever. Never look down on someone because you don’t know the situation. Food banks nationwide are being overwhelmed. Kids are hungry and scared. In the richest country in the world this is unacceptable and the time to demand change. I will vote for anyone who looks after my best interests, a roof over my head, food on my table, the ability to seek medical care and the drugs to treat us and our families. WE AS A UNION AND A COUNTRY HAVE TO DEMAND CHANGE AND SEEK PERMANENT REFORMS! If we don’t see this start happening then we vote them out regardless of political affiliation. There is so much fake news out there and especially on Face Book. I see members and friends arguing all the time and it makes me sick. I literally had to stop writing this and dry my eyes. I see what was once the greatest country on earth so divided, so much hate and nastiness. People who claim to be Christians belittling and JUDGING! My God tells me He will judge. We are suppose to love our neighbor as ourselves and take care of the least of these. Brothers and Sisters we have to stand more united now than ever. The companies and politicians expect us to have a rainy day fund but these billionaires and global companies make record profits and give it to the shareholders and expect US, the working class bail them out. If these companies bought up their company’s stock at pennies on the dollar then make them sell it for pennies on the dollar before applying for a bailout and never let them buy it back. Make them accountable to “US” once again. As we call and email politicians demanding permanent unemployment changes just remember if we don’t get it fixed and hold them accountable now we are doomed to repeat history again. I have been more stressed now than at negotiations because it’s our Member’s health and safety, their financial wellness and livelihoods at stake.
I was questioned why we didn’t make this push on the Oct lay-off for unemployment reform. The truth is I’ve been preaching this both my terms as President but no one seemed to be motivated or attend the info meetings I had after the Union meetings. Only a handful came in with questions. The reality is we have never had a better chance to get it done than now. This has affected virtually everyone in the state of NC so let’s finish strong and demand change. Once again the list of NC Reps and Senators are on uawlocal5285.com. Nationally we have to demand our Senators and Reps get out of the lobbyists pockets and do what is best for “We The People”.
I truly love everyone of you all and I’m striving to be a person my family and my God would be proud of.
